Plymouth Hoe

In the heart of the historic city, enjoy breathtaking views across Plymouth Sound and the South West

Plymouth Hoe is a breathtaking seafront expanse that offers panoramic views over Plymouth Sound, one of the world’s most beautiful natural harbours. Steeped in history, it is famously the site where Sir Francis Drake is said to have played bowls before setting off to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588. The Hoe is dominated by the iconic Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, which visitors can climb for even more spectacular vistas. With its wide green spaces, perfect for picnics and relaxation, and various monuments, including the imposing Royal Navy War Memorial. Plymouth Hoe is a favourite spot for both locals and tourists to enjoy the beauty and heritage of the city.

West Hoe Park

The parks have a large grassed area and sensory garden perfect for a family day out, where you can picnic, play and relax by taking in the beautiful surroundings. Standing tall on the lawn is the iconic Smeaton's Tower lighthouse. Gaze down at the shoreline, and you’ll see Tinside Lido, which is open to the public for swimming during the summer months.

Plymouth Naval Memorial

The Plymouth Naval Memorial commemorates 7,251 sailors of the First World War and 15,933 of the Second World War. The Memorial is situated centrally on The Hoe, which looks directly towards Plymouth Sound. It is accessible at all times.

Plymouth Hoe is steeped in history. It is here where Sir Francis Drake finished a game of bowls before heading out to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588. Today he is immortalised in a statue.

At the eastern end of the Hoe, you’ll find The Royal Citadel, the most impressive 17th-century fortress in Britain and, for many years, England’s most important defence against attack from the sea. The Citadel has been in constant military occupation since it was built, and today it is home to some of Plymouth’s modern heroes..

Plymouth Hoe Events

Plymouth Hoe is also host to many fantastic annual events, including the famous Armed Forces Weekend, Plymouth Hoe Festival, MTV Crashes Plymouth and the British Firework Championships.
