A year-long celebration for everyone living, working and visiting the coast
2023 is the Year of the Coast. The campaign has been designed to raise awareness of our coastline and inspire you to visit. Plymouth is the ideal destination as you'll be spoilt with coastal views, walks and activities. The UK coastline is one of the most exciting in the world. It is more than 185 million years old and is varied. There are family resorts, natural beauty, fishing villages and maritime ports like historic Plymouth.
One of the best ways to appreciate Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City, is from the water. There are plenty of opportunities to dive in and enjoy the sea from boat trips to paddle-boarding, kayaking or sailing and rowing.
Plymouth is a city shaped by the fortunes of sea, trade and war, nowhere more so than in the historic Barbican. Plymouth's delightful old port, full of narrow cobbled streets, Elizabethan warehouses, specialist shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants.
You'll also discover the Mayflower Museum here. It is set over three floors explores the story of the voyage of the Pilgrims and their journey aboard the Mayflower to the New World. Your journey of discovery begins by stepping onto the balcony on the top floor to enjoy a fantastic panoramic views.
At the National Marine Aquarium you can learn more about the sea and conservation. It is the largest aquarium in the UK and has over 4000 animals. Including over 70 sharks, stingrays, octopuses, jellyfish and a very cheeky turtle, there will be something different on every visit.
Plymouth Hoe is the natural heart of Plymouth with breathtaking views across Plymouth Sound, one of the most perfect natural harbours in the world. It has a large grassed area and sensory garden perfect for a family day out, where you can picnic, play and relax by taking in the beautiful surroundings.
Sir Francis Drake, the intrepid explorer and local hero, is immortalised in a statue here, situated just a few metres from the green where he finished his game of bowls before heading out to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588.
Standing tall on the lawn is the iconic Smeaton's Tower lighthouse. Gaze down at the shoreline and you’ll see the glorious Art Deco Tinside Lido which is open to the public for bathing during the summer months.
Designed by Victorian architect Sir John Rennie and constructed between 1825 and 1831, Royal William Yard is steeped in history. It is even considered to be one of the most important groups of historic military buildings in Britain, it is also the largest collection of Grade 1 listed military buildings in Europe.
The Yard is one of Plymouth’s premier lifestyle destinations and is an arts and culture destination with regular public events taking place including outdoor theatre productions and open-air cinema, arts and crafts markets. You can get to it by land and sea, as The Yard has its own harbour with mooring facilities.
There will be additional celebrations in 2023 as the South West Coast Path will be having its 50th Anniversary. The National Trail is the UK's longest, with 630 miles to explore, connect with nature, relax and exercise. In and around Plymouth, walks include Tamar Lake and Headland Chapel, Mount Edgcumbe, and Wembury and Mount Batten Point.
Living on the coast, you're guaranteed to get the freshest seafood. Every kind of fish and shellfish is sold, with the most common being lemon sole, haddock, Dover sole, plaice, whiting, cod, pollock, cuttlefish and scallops.
The English Muffin was created in Plymouth as well as Plymouth Gin. However, you can also expect fish and chips, Cornish pasties, cream tea with clotted cream or a Kinckerbocker glory.
There are two exciting food festivals in Plymouth each year. Flavour Fest is in June, where you can discover the best of the west country's local food and drink and a packed programme of chef demonstrations. Plymouth's Seafood Festival is in September. The two day celebration has quayside stalls, a cookery theatre, live music and street entertainment.
