If you’re considering a romantic city break, Plymouth in the South West of England may not be the first place that springs to mind. However, the city has plenty of perfect date night ideas to offer and unusual things to do in Plymouth. If you’re heading to Plymouth as a couple, be sure that the following is on your to-do list.
Treat your partner to a trip to The Theatre Royal in Plymouth City Centre. It was officially opened in 1982 by Princess Margaret and welcomes West End Musicals, Opera and Ballet to the stage. There's also the Barbican Theatre and the Plymouth Pavillions, where concerts, live music and stand-up comedy are performed.
Are you and your partner Gin fanatics? If so, the Master Distiller’s private tour at the UK’s oldest gin distillery, Black Friars, is definitely for you. This tour includes creating your very own bottle of Plymouth Gin. Or pop to The Refectory Cocktail Bar and sample a gin cocktail or two.
Don't be fooled; it's not just for children. You will be amazed by the Sand Tiger Sharks at the sea horses at the National Marine Aquarium, the UK’s biggest aquarium. If you want to do something different on select dates, you can dine after hours in the glow of the 650,000-litre tank or get up for an early morning yoga session.
Catch the Cremyll Ferry and follow in the footsteps of the great seafarers of the past, such as Sir Francis Drake. The Plymouth Brethren left the Barbican harbour area in 1620 for the New World in North America. You can find out more about this at the Mayflower Museum. There are plenty of National Trust properties to visit too.
Plym Valley Cycle Trail follows the route of an old Great Western Railway track. With glorious oak woodland and open countryside, the scenery is bound to take your breath away. Why not pack a picnic, and have a romantic stop-off? You can also cycle around The Barbican, Sutton Harbour, or Dartmoor National Park.
Of course, Future Inns is a cycle-friendly hotel. You can keep your bike in your bedroom, and we even have a guest laundry room if you want to wash and dry any clothing.
Put some comfy shoes on and take a leisurely stroll, hand in hand, through the heart of the city's heritage, Royal William Yard or The Barbican and Sutton Harbour. This is a beautifully vibrant place to visit, full of cobbled streets and listed buildings. The stunning Elizabethan Garden is free for you to explore.
Be sure to check out the Plymouth Walking Trails App, which is free to download and use. It has many different scenic routes to discover more of the city.
When in Devon, it is pretty much compulsory to experience a cream tea. Que the couple’s squabble about whether the cream or jam goes on first. As well as our own homemade afternoon tea in Fishbone Restaurant is excellent value; we recommend The Tudor Rose Tea Rooms. It has a delightful secret garden and history too.
Take a look at Smeaton’s Tower, a red and white lighthouse. A national landmark, it sits on the grassy bank of Plymouth Hoe. For a romantic view, go to the lantern room – it has amazing views of Plymouth Sound, Drakes Island and the city.
Take a dip in the beautifully restored art deco circular outdoor pool, Tinside Lido. Set in an amazing location overlooking the sea at the tip of Plymouth Hoe and voted one of the top 10 best outdoor pools in Europe, this is not to be missed.
Get active and try kayaking with your partner. Mount Batten Watersport’s Centre is located in the very bay where the America’s Cup was held in 2011. However, you can do many other things out on the water, from sailing, diving, boat trips or even paddle boarding over to Drake's Island.
If you want to feel sand beneath your toes, there are plenty of beaches near Plymouth too.
There are so many things to do in Plymouth to fill your time when visiting. Discover the haunted buildings of Plymouth or what you can do in 48 hours for adventurers. Hit the shops at Drake Circus with our shopping guide to Plymouth, or discover how you can visit Plymouth on a budget.
