Plymouth Museum | Gallery Plymouth
The Box is Plymouth's and the South West's major new museum, art gallery and archive. It is just a short walk from the main city centre, Drake Circus shopping mall, train and coach station.
The permanent galleries and exhibitions are filled with highlights from the city's art, human history, media, film and archive collections. Every museum must have a natural history gallery, but Plymouth’s stands out from the crowd with a life-size model of a woolly mammoth built in Minnesota and shipped over.
The collections tell the stories of a nation and include the UK’s most significant collection of explorer materials, the Plymouth Bomb Book, evidencing the most destructive raids of the Second World War and proof that Devon invented the Cornish pasty. The 100 Journeys gallery is an interactive exploration of the epic voyages that began in Plymouth, from Sir Francis Drake to Walter Scott and all the way up to Greta Thunberg.
Or, use the research facilities to discover more about your local and family history. Including the Mayflower.
Throughout the year, you can hear talks, see tours and live music, and participate in creative family workshops.
