National Trust Dyffryn Gardens

Dyffryn Gardens is a historic estate located in the Vale of Glamorgan, on the outskirts of Cardiff, Wales. Renowned for its stunning Edwardian gardens, it features a series of themed garden rooms, including a formal rose garden, a Mediterranean garden, and a tranquil reflecting pool. The estate also includes an arboretum, glasshouses with exotic plants, and the grand Dyffryn House, which offers insight into the site's rich history. Managed by the National Trust, Dyffryn Gardens is a popular destination for visitors seeking natural beauty, horticultural excellence, and a peaceful retreat.

The gardens at Dyffryn cover more than 55 acres, which is excellent for a day outdoors exploring. They were commissioned by Reginald Cory and designed by the famed Edwardian garden designer Thomas Mawson in 1906. Coal magnate John Cory developed them further. With intimate garden rooms, formal lawns, and an extensive arboretum, there's plenty to see. Over the next few years, the gardens are undergoing an ambitious revival to restore them to their original 1920s splendour.

Dyffryn Gardens House

The grand Victorian mansion overlooks the heart of the Edwardian gardens. Listed at grade II* status, it had been remodelled from an earlier mansion and was completed in 1892-3. The Cory family were industrialists who made their wealth from coal. The house provided a secluded family home within commutable distance of their business interests across South Wales. The house came to the National Trust in 2013 without a collection. No original belongings, pieces of furniture or art remained in the house. This has been an ongoing project, and original pieces from the time are being brought into the house.

There are plenty of one-off events throughout the year, from galleries, gardener walks, behind-the-scenes, and the popular Winter Lights in December and January.

Dyffryn Gardens Tickets

Is Dyffryn Gardens free? National Trust Members get free entry. The entry fee is £12 for adults, £6 for children, and £30 for family tickets. There is free parking for all attendees.

Currently, only the gardens and cafe are open between 10am - 6pm, with the last entry at 5pm. (It's 4pm and 5pm in the winter months)
