Is there anything better than the atmosphere in Cardiff on an international rugby day?

 

The Wales national rugby union team competes annually in the Six Nations Championship against rivals England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy and won the competition last in 2019.  Their home ground is the Principality Stadium, previously called the Millennium Stadium which was built to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup.  

Rugby is Wales' national sport and it holds an important part in Welsh culture.  Rugby is as characteristically Welsh as coal mining and male voice choirs and has become important in building Wales' modern identity.  Players are seen as local heroes.

Supporters are known for singing before, during and after the matches.  Popular songs include Max Boyce's 'Hymns and Arias', Tom Jones' 'Bread of Heaven' and The Stereophonics 'Local Boy in the Photograph' which has the lyrics "There's no mistake, I smell that smell, it's that time of year again." The perfect anthem for rugby season.

Getting to The Principality Stadium from Future Inn Cardiff

By Car

The Principality Stadium is a 6-minute taxi ride from Future Inn Cardiff. Parking is available in the city centre as pay and display or by the hour multi-story car parks.  

By Bus

The number 6 Bay Car bus goes from in front of County Hall a 3-minute walk from the hotel and takes you directly to Cardiff Central Bus Station, it is a further 4-minute walk to the Principality Stadium.

If you'd like to explore Cardiff, the hop-on, hop-off Cardiff City Sightseeing red bus also goes from the Wales Millennium Centre. 

By Train

Cardiff Bay train station is a 5-minute walk from the hotel and takes you to Cardiff Queen Street station, followed by a 15-minute walk to the Principality Stadium. Alternatively, you could change lines for Cardiff Central followed by a 5-minute walk.

By Bike

Nextbike operates in Cardiff, and a station is at the end of Hemmingway Road, near Cardiff Bay train station, a 5-minute walk from the hotel. It would then take approximately 14-minutes to cycle to the Nextbike station on St Mary's Street.  It would be a 4-minute walk to the Principality Stadium. Future Inn Cardiff is a cycle-friendly hotel, and we allow guests to keep bikes in your room with cycle mats supplied. 

By Water

The Aquabus (water taxi) goes from Cardiff Bay to Bute Park, opposite the Cardiff Arms Park and Principality Stadium. It runs all year round, weather permitting, between 1030 and 1630. It takes around 25-minutes. 

On Foot

It would take around 30-minutes to walk from the hotel.

Thomas Restaurant is ideal to fuel up before the event. The team serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, evening a-la-carte or traditional roasts on Sunday. A homemade Taste of Wales Afternoon Tea is served daily between 1pm-5pm or our set menu offers 3 courses for £25 daily from 5pm.

A large selection of drinks is also available, including popular local brands. Our Welsh drink selection includes Brains beers, Penderyn whiskey and vodka, Benjamin Hall gins, and Cariad wines. An extensive gin and mixer menu and 2 for £16 cocktails.
