Leigh Woods

Leigh Woods, on the outskirts Bristol, is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Stretch your legs and take in the incredible views over Avon gorge. Within Leigh Woods is Stokeleigh Camp, a hill fort thought to have been occupied from the third century BC to the first century AD and also in the Middle Ages. Don’t forget to take a picnic, as there are lots of places to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

How to get there

The best way to visit is to walk from the city centre and across the Clifton Suspension Bridge with its magnificent views. This takes 1 hour and 20 minutes from Future Inn Bristol but also takes in many of the city centre attractions. Alternatively, it takes 17-minutes to drive there, or 31-minutes on a bike. You could also take the X3 or X4 bus towards Portishead, starting at Bristol Bus Station, which will take around 40-minutes in total.

Parking is via a cashless pay and display unit. Car parking is £2 for up to 2 hours and £4 for up to 4 hours.

Blaise Hamlet

The hamlet, which is 4 miles from the city centre, was built in 1811 to house the retired staff from Blaise Castle. Blaise Hamlet is 9 picturesque cottages around an open green. It was one of the first examples of a planned community, and there is a stone sundial and water pump on the green. The cottages are lived in, so entry is to the village green only.

How to get there

From Future Inn Bristol it is a 21-minute drive to Blaise Hamlet. You could also cycle, which takes around 36-minutes. Or get on the number 1 or 76 bus from Bristol Bus Station, which would take around 50-minutes in total.

Parking is also free. There is on-street parking on Hallen Road.

Failand

The rural retreat is where you will discover spectacular views across the Severn estuary to Wales. There are lots of walking trails to enjoy in the peaceful woodlands with babbling brooks. Along the way, you can expect to see an abundance of wildlife and flowers – especially bluebells in spring. There are also the Summerhouse ruins and the impressive Failand Church with its 120-foot spire.

How to get there

Failand is a 17-minute drive from Future Inn Bristol. You could also cycle, which takes around 42-minutes. Bus services do run from Cabot Circus, where the hotel is based and will take you 35-minutes.

Parking is also free. Limited parking can be found by the Jubilee Oak on Sandy Land near Home Farm, or by St Bartholomew's Church.

Clevedon Court

At Clevedon Court, you can experience the 14th-century manor house and 18th-century terraced garden. The great hall and chapel block are the earliest surviving parts of the structure. It is the ancestral home to the Elton family, and their unique possessions including a collection of local Eltonware potter and Nailsea glass can be seen. The garden is spread over 6 levels, and protected from the wind, making it a peaceful paradise.

How to get there

Clevedon Court is a 28-minute drive from Future Inn Bristol. You could also cycle or travel by bus, which would take around 1 hour 10-minutes. The bus journey would begin at Cabot Circus, where the hotel is situated.

Cadbury Camp

Cadbury Camp was once part of Clevedon Court Estate. Climb the steep hill to discover the Iron Age hill fort. It offers peace and tranquillity, with views of the Mendips, Exmoor and even Flat Holm and Steep Holm out to sea. To the west you a see south Wales and the Brecon Beacons. It is an excellent spot to see a wide variety of wildflowers too. 

How to get there

From Future Inn Bristol it is a 24-minute drive to Cadbury Camp. You could also cycle, via the National Cycle Network route 33 which takes 1 hour 11-minutes. There are also regular bus services starting at Cabot Circus, where the hotel is based, and this will take you around 1 hour and 20-minutes.

Parking is also free at Tickenham Village Hall.

Dyrham Park

At Dyrham Park you’ll find a 17th-century house and gardens, and an ancient deer park. The 270-acre parkland is full of magnificent trees, breathtaking views and expansive gardens. You are even encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy the grounds at your leisure. The house, attached orangery, stable block and accompanying St Peter’s parish church are all Grade I listed. A manor at Dyrham was even recorded in the Doomsday Book in 1086.

How to get there

From Future Inn Bristol, Dyrham Park is a 20-minute drive. You could also cycle which would take around 1 hour 30-minutes. Due to its location, there are no buses that run direct to Dyrham Park. The nearest bus stop is Home Park a 27-minute walk away – the whole journey would take 1 hour and 22-minutes.

Free for National Trust members, with free parking.

£8 per adult, £4 per child, 1 adult and 2 children £12, or a family for £20. 

Parking is £2 for two hours, or £4 all day. 

Horton Court

The unique Grade I listed manor house, Horton Court, has been used as a filming location for both Wolf Hall and Poldark. Its history stretches back to 1185. The house is now used as a holiday cottage; however, the rolling gardens and the small countryside village of Horton is a fantastic stop off. The garden has a beautiful lake and mature woodland views. Even if you do not intend to stay, there are regular guided tours.

How to get there

Horton Court is a 27-minute drive from Future Inn Bristol. There are no public transport stops nearby, so with a mixture of bus journeys and walking it would take 2 hours. Cycling via the Bristol and Bath Railway Path would take 1 hour 35-minutes.

Entry and car parking is only valid on days that Horton Court is open to visitors.

Sand Point

For when you want to embrace the great outdoors, Sand Point is a popular place for walking. The stretch of coastline commands views all the way to Flat Holm island in Cardiff and across the Bristol Channel, as well as Clevedon and the Severn Bridge (now the Prince of Wales Bridge).

How to get there

From Future Inn Bristol, Sand Point is a 36-minute drive. Again, due to its location, using public transport – including train, bus and walking – would take you 1 hour and 57-minutes. Cycling is possible and is via a busy A-road and the National Cycle Route 33.
